Here we feature a series of Local and World Community News that may be of interest to our subscribers...

The secrets of everyday wellbeing by James Tighe, clinical nurse research fellow

Someone once said that the secret of happiness is having someone to love, something to do, and something to look forward to. There's probably some truth in this - although it doesn't mean you have to have an adoring spouse or partner, a high-powered job and a world cruise coming up in order to enjoy life! The 'someone to love' could be a friend, relative or pet, and the 'something to do' and 'something to look forward to' could be just about anything you enjoy.

But even if you have those three 'somethings', there may be times when you don't feel very good. The way we feel can be affected by all sorts of things - including lifestyle, past experiences and genetic factors.

Scientists also say that people who always seem to be in a good mood may simply have naturally higher levels of certain substances - endorphins (types of hormone) and the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin. These are released by the brain and make you feel good when you're enjoying yourself or when something nice happens.

But our state of mind is only partly influenced by the past or by physical factors. The rest is down to us - to the way we think about things and how we manage the different aspects of our lives. Most of us have much more influence over our feelings than we may think.

But taking control doesn't mean suppressing or denying your feelings - it means understanding the way the mind works and trying to change negative ways of thinking into more positive ones. We can't always avoid negative thoughts, but one of the secrets of mental balance is being able to notice when you're 'choosing' or 'allowing yourself' to think negatively rather than positively, and keeping an eye on the way your lifestyle affects your mood.

Feel-good factors are...

relaxation, the ability to express your feelings, achievable goals to aim for, time for the things you enjoy, a healthy diet a sport or exercise you enjoy, work you find rewarding, a comfortable balance between work and leisure, time to yourself, to do the things that interest you, time for friends and family

Things to minimise in your life are... too much stress, feelings of rage or frustration, expecting too much of yourself, negative thoughts and feelings

There's no instant recipe for a sense of wellbeing - but these are some of the main ingredients.

CONTROL YOUR EMOTIONS

Our mission in this feature is to learn how to give free rein to our emotions in order to experience the Power of Love. Our emotions need to flow continuously as we experience them. If the heart is closed or blocked we are unable to express ourselves and life lacks intensity and passion.

In today's society, many people have unfortunately learned from an early age to block, suppress or deny their emotions. We get used to living in an emotional inertia, a numbness that protects us from suffering that stops us from experiencing the joy of living in the present... Now.

We cannot escape from our emotions however hard we try to resist or deny them. We will experience them either as they come up or distorted and more painful in the future. Unexpressed, repressed or suppressed emotional energy becomes toxic and surfaces in the form of dis-ease.

THe 5 basic emotions from which all others originate are...

Fear, Anger, Sadness, Joy, and Compassion.

They are all essential to our survival and general well-being. If we see them as friends we are able to express them clearly and honestly. Each of these emotions have different vibrations of energy levels and intensities.

Something happens within us that is crucial to understand if we are to take control of our lives. These various elements are the sensations and feelings we experience as we structure our thoughts. Our perspective, our point-of-view is shaped by our experiences.

Doubt is one of the most powerful blocks to our success. The process of creation of an idea through to its realisation in material terms must include confidence and total belief on the outcome.

FIVE BASIC EMOTIONS

FEAR

It is a useful emotion that puts us on our guard and intensifies our awareness. A sensitive antennae that is well adjusted will indicate any form of danger. This enables us to identify and deal with threats as they occur. If out of balance, fear can lead to a general paranoia and chronic mistrust of people.

Various parts of the body begin to indicate symptoms of fear, but we are so used to it that the don't hear the message crying out to be noticed. If we are afraid of fear itself we cannot transform it into positive energy.

Unexpressed fear tends to tense the muscles of the jaw, neck, lower back and raises the shoulders... this stops us from breathing deeply... which stops us from relaxing.

ANGER

It is a reaction that protects our integrity when we feel personal boundaries have been crossed. When we feel 'invaded' anger is a way to say 'NO' to an injustice or violation. Justified anger is immediate, clear and requires no explanation. It exposes what is inappropriate in a way that is beneficial to all.

Repressed anger is a widespread phenomenon in society and leads to family violence, crime, war etc. The physical signs can be seen everywhere... tense jaws, clenched fists, stiff backs, raised voices and blazing eyes.

When we express our anger properly, protecting our territory against a real threat of invasion, it is usually followed by a feeling of compassion as we begin to understand the motives of our aggressor.

SADNESS

It is an emotional relaxation or release that occurs when our expectations are not fullfilled. Sadness hurts because it implies letting go of something we are attached to and the sense of loss that we have to live with.

Outward signs include... long face, hunched back, slumped shoulders, feet dragging on the ground etc. We conclude that to be happy we must avoid sadness, but this not the case, we must accept the inevitable disappointments in life.

Sadness brings us in contact with the most vulnerable part of ourselves. It is a release of energy that if held back will lead to a mechanical life with suppressed feelings. Once we finally express our sadness we often find that 'Joy' makes an appearance.

JOY

It is an expansive energy of dynamic well-being that invigourates us, makes the eyes shine and puts a spring in our step. When we experience joy we are relaxed and happy to go with the flow of life. It comes to us when our emotional energy is free to react appropriately to experiences we encounter.

Joy cures, strengthens and restores confidence in what our inner life should be. We no longer avoid the fear of the present by always wanting to be somewhere else, in another situation, in the past or uncertain future.

We feel a natural euphoria when totally focused on an activity we enjoy. We can get so involved in what we are doing that there is no past or future... only the present moment... NOW. Of course when having these experiences there are no negative emotions bringing us down.

COMPASSION & ENTHUSIASM FOR OTHERS

COMPASSION

We experience compassion when we have fear, anger, sadness and joy. When these emotions form part of our everyday life we become more aware of them in other people and begin to understand their motives.

Compassion is being able to feel what another person is feeling while remaining sufficiently detached to understand their needs and to know what to say and do. What they need and what they want are not always the same thing.

Once we have learned to express our emotions as they occur, we are no longer tempted to threaten the vital space of others. This gives them the opportunity to stop being invaded by their fears. We are now able to give other people exactly what they need, which opens the door to success and prosperity for us.

Many people think it would deplete their energy supply to give something of themselves. In fact it requires a great deal more energy to maintain an attitude of cold indifference than to simply be guided by our emotions. We cannot save anything by accumulating emotional energy within us as it is ultimately harmful to our organism.

Studies have shown that being kind to others has definite physiological advantages. Gestures that come from deep within the heart are a tonic and natural form of release for the body. The ability to live from the heart enables us to live in the present and experience the miraculous power of love. Love is universal energy... the key that will open all doors to our success, prosperity, harmony and happiness.

Singing is a simple and immediate way of releasing the flow of emotions, that are represented in a variety of musical styles. Sing as often as you can... at home, in your car, or wherever the opportunity arises. Hum freely and deeply allowing the sound to rise from the pit of your stomach (Hara, one point, centre of gravity). Feel it vibrating throughout your body and allow old 'negative emotions' to be released and dispersed.

Imagine and create the feelings and sensations you would experience if you had already become the person you wish to be. Powerfully send out those feelings to the universal energy as you repeat your words of power. 15 minutes morning and evening for 30-90 days to accumulate more and more power in your intent to succeed.

The intensity of our desire and deep-seated belief in the ideal outcome develops vibrations, resonance and amplification. This is powerful and gives us the tools, that are within us, to achieve our dreams, desires and life goals. (a goal is a dream with an end date). If we do not have absolute belief, our wishes will have no results.
