POWERFUL SUPERFOODS

What are the most powerful superfoods?

Some experts believe that there are certain substances that are very effective to counteract the effects of ageing. The following Superfoods are of particular interest in regard to anti-ageing...

CAROTENES are naturally occurring organic substances that convert into vitamin A. The best known are the beta-carotenes that are powerful antioxidants. There is growing evidence suggesting that a concentration of carotenes in the body, along with naturally occurring antioxidants are factors that determine the length of the lifespan of mammals, including human beings. The best sources are carrots, and green leaf vegetables... broccoli and spinach, beets, sweet potatoes, squashes, pumpkins etc.

FLAVONOIDS are a group of naturally occurring plant pigments found in fruits and green vegetables. They are potent antioxidants that counteract free radicals to fight cancer, and also have anti-ageing properties. Flavonoids have anti-cancer, anti-viral, anti-allergy, and anti-inflammatory properties. They protect the heart, circulation and skin. Found in... cranberries, bilberries, cherries, blackcurrants, strawberries, raspberries, grapes, broccoli, citrus fruit, apples, mangoes, seeds, herbs, etc.

GLUTATHIONE is a naturally occurring antioxidant from amino acids. It has attracted interest from anti-ageing specialists as levels are normally low in the elderly and those who are chronically sick. People who live a long life maintain a higher concentration of glutathione in their blood. Good sources are... fresh vegetables and fruit, carrots, tomatoes, broccoli, potatoes, spinach, asparagus, avocado pears, water melon, etc.

CO-ENZYME Q10 is a naturally occurring antioxidant enzyme that is found in human cells and tissue. It plays a vital role in energy metabolism and helps protect the heart and immune system. Levels begin to decline in middle age. Good sources are... mackeral, sardines, herring, tuna, salmon, trout, walnuts, almonds, brazil nuts, soya beans, spinach, also available as a supplement.

CARNOSINE is a dipeptide (protein) compound, composed of two amino acid molecules. It occurs naturally in muscles, the brain, nerves, and in the lens of the eyes. It boosts activity against free radicals in the organs, it boost the immune system by increasing the life of the white blood cells which consume bacteria and fight infection. It is available as a supplement and expected to be a key product in promoting a long, healthy and active life. Good sources are... poultry, lean red meat.

PHOSPHOLIPIDS are naturally occurring organic substances containing two fatty acids and phosphate, that have water attracting and water repelling properties. They form an important ingredient of animal and plant cell membrane. One of the best known is lecithin which is found in the membranes of living cells. These have beneficial effects on the brain, nervous system and skin, absorption of vitamins and the control of blood cholesterol. Good sources include... soya beans, corn, walnuts, wholewheat, wheatgerm, egg yolks, liver. Also available as a supplement.

POWERFUL HERBS

Mankind's desire for better health leads to a focus on those few herbs and minerals that can give special help. A few herbs and vegetables have been designated as miraculous...

Goldenseal is a universal herb as it helps the whole body. It is believed to correct the cause of... colds, flu, chills, rashes, sore throat, burns, constipation, aids digestion, is a detoxifier, heals wounds, toughens flabby tissue and fights infections and fevers. But long-term use is not recommended as it drains the body of B1, B6 & B12 vitamins. If used for more than 5-6 days take extra B and C vitamins.

Drinking raw red potato juice can have miraculous effects as it contains very important enzymes and vitamin C. It should be consumed within 15 minutes of juicing as it loses its effectiveness very quickly. Use ONLY red potatoes as the brown ones contain an anti proteoletic enzyme which inhibits protein digestion and causes constipation, headache, stomach cramps etc.

Pimiento is a sweet pepper often grown in Italy. It contain rich sources of substances required by the body to make connective tissue (collagen)... vit C, vit A, calcium, phosphorus, zinc, chromium, amino acids, flavones, citrines and bioflavonoids. It also contains hormones to maintain the heart.

Kelp is a common seaweed which contains every vital mineral needed for the health of the body... aluminium, barium, bismuth, boron, calcium, chlorine, chromium, cobalt, copper, gallium, iodine, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, phosphorus, potassium, silicon, silver, sodium, strontium, sulpher, tin, titanium, vanadium, zirconium etc. Excellent for relieving rickets, anaemia, constipation, stomach trouble, headache, kidney disorders, eczema, neuritis, asthma and low vitality.

Alfalfa is a rich source of proteins, minerals and vitamins, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus and calcium, and organic salts. It helps to balance blood pressure, softens hard arteries, rich in iron to help anaemia, calcium prevents dental problems. The green leaf contains eight essential enzymes. It assists in the digestion of protein, fat, starch and sugar.

Spearmint regulates the delicate PH balance better than any other substance. If your body is too alkaline or too acid spearmint can correct it. It works on the endocrine gland system to regulate, modify and stabilise the functions of the glands. it supplies important minerals that are soothing for the nerves. The oil has antibiotic and pain-relieving qualities. Helps the digestive system.

There are many more important superfoods, and we will cover these in a later issue of harmony. These include... spirulina, chlorella, watercress, wheatgrass, red algae, kelp, kale, parsley, beets, broccoli, spinach, high antioxident superfruits, probiotics, etc.
