Feeding The Olympics

How and Why the Food for London 2012
Should be Local, Organic and Ethical

In aiming to stage the greenest games ever, London’s bid promised to provide “local, seasonal and organic” food.

A new report Feeding the Olympics from the Soil Association, Sustain and Nef calls on London to deliver the promise to be the greenest and healthiest Games in terms of the food they provide, and sets out how this can be done.

It also highlights that London 2012 Olympics offers a unique opportunity to highlight the relationship between physical fitness and healthy food, to transform the food available at all major events, and to showcase the benefits of local, seasonal and organic food on a world stage.

Food plays a vital role in climate change; around 20% of the UK’s contribution to greenhouse gas emissions are caused by our food and drink. These emissions can be significantly reduced if we all shift towards eating organic, local, seasonal food, and less meat and dairy products.

The Games could also help promote sustainable fish consumption, and ensure that any imported food meets Fairtrade standards.

Two of the leading sponsors of the Olympics, McDonalds and Coca-Cola, want to associate their brands with the image and ethics of the Games.

The contradiction between their leading products and the 2012 Games ‘healthy’ and ‘green’ credentials are clear and have attracted a good deal of criticism, from politicians, the media and the medical community.

The report challenges Coca-Cola and McDonalds to meet the promises set out in the bid by serving 75% unprocessed, 50% locally sourced, and 30% organic food and drink. Coca-Cola should pay for access to free non-bottled drinking water for all Games visitors.

Aikido was founded by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969), who gained the skill to control many attackers at will. He was unique in his ability to express his understanding of universal principles and laws of nature. He was also a very spiritual person who spent years in study, prayer and contemplation.

This is a martial art of Peace that develops in us an acute awareness of our surrounding environment, the ability to be calm, focused, relaxed and centred. Millions of Aikido practitioners around the World experience the positive benefits of... Aikido - The Way of Harmony

Harmony of Mind-Body-Spirit at the Aikido Health Centre

There are many areas of the body where intense pain develops when they are attacked. At these points, energy can be transmitted into a nerve very effectively, and as a result, they are known as pressure points or nerve centres.

Pressure points of this type occur where a nerve branch connects to a major nerve pathway or where several major nerves join together to form a nerve plexus. When such a point is stimulated by pressing or striking, the resulting pain registers on more than one nerve pathway. As a result, the brain receives signals from multiple nerves and the pain felt is amplified.

In Martial arts, nerve centres or pressure points are used to disable and to defeat opponents. However, the same points are used in acupuncture and acupressure to heal the body and to restore balance and harmony.

Different pressure points respond to different kinds of stimulation. Some respond to striking, others to pressing or rubbing. In addition, the angle at which a pressure point is attacked is critical to proper activation.

In many cases, the full effect of pressure point activation can only be felt if the angle of attack is such that the entire nerve plexus or connection is stimulated. Proper angles of attack together with specific methods of stimulation must always be considered.

Nerve centre pressure point attacks make very effective attack points in self defense situations. Some martial arts (Aikido, for instance) are built almost entirely upon the application of pressure point knowledge. These points are used to control or to quickly incapacitate an opponent.

Activation of a pressure point can cause excruciating pain capable of making almost any adversary back down. When the pressure point is released, the pain subsides. Therefore, compliance can be gained without inflicting serious injury.

Traditional Chinese medicine theory is based on the idea that specific pathway lines called meridians exist on the human body, along which are found many hundreds of acupressure points. Acupuncture is the most well known use of the meridian system. According to proponents, pressing, seizing or striking these points (or combinations of points) with specific intent and at certain angles can result in either heightening or diminishing qi circulation in the body, according to this theory.

Pressure Points are very small... How can I really hit them? The points themselves are small, but the area of activation is about the size of a fist, and there are 360+ places on the body to hit as well. Do I have to hit them in a specific order? Absolutely Not. Are there one strike Knockouts? Yes. Do I need to practise Martial Arts to learn this? No.

How long does the effect last when I hit a point? This depends on how well it was struck, but as a rough guideline, the effect on the body lasts for approximately 20 minutes on a decreasing scale. The lighter the touch the quicker the cycles return to normal. Are their dangers involved? There are dangers in all Martial Arts, which can be greatly reduced by a well trained instructor.

There are many possible reasons for points not working for you. Using one or two of the Principles will usually solve most problems. Correct angle and direction could be another reason. Also, bear in mind that some people just do not feel the pain at very low power levels. DO NOT increase the power levels in training, though you are likely to use full power for street defence.

Nearly all of the techniques of Aikido have the potential elements of pressure point strikes available in them. These can be very useful in reducing the strength and focus of our attackers, in order to successfully escape or apply a controlling technique.

If the technique chosen, is the correct choice in the circumstances, and has perfect timing, then pressure point strikes will not be necessary. In Aikido, 'Atemi' is the term used for a distracting strike to give you an advantage over your attacker.

Atemi does include a wide range of applied force, from striking without touching to striking vital points with the intent of causing unconsciousness. Knowing the different effects of a strike on various parts of the body can improve your technique and self defence skills.

The largest weapon available to You, wherever you are, is the planet Earth itself. Hitting your attacker with this weapon, by unbalancing them, so they fall down, will gain you valuable time to retreat or take control.

Master Russell Stutely has been acknowledged as Europe's Leading Authority on the use of Pressure Points in the Martial Arts. He is one of the leading sources of inspiration in street effective pressure points over the last 8 years. He has been instrumental in dragging Traditional Martial Arts kicking and screaming into the 21st Century.

Russell is a regular Columnist for the UK's most prestigious Martial Arts magazines... Martial Arts Illustrated, Traditional Karate and Combat. He is also one of the leading Seminar Instructors in the UK.

He has recently developed a set of Dvd's called 'Pressure Points Black' covering all of the essentials required to make this art effective. You will learn some easy-to-apply methods effective in a real street attack.

I personally have this series and use many of the amazing techniques in my daily training routine. I can highly recommend them to You. Why not take a look now by clicking... Pressure Points Black

Some people are very sensitive to what is going on with their mind's and body's, but the rest of us have far too much to do each day and we lose some of this sensitivity. In this way we do not notice some of the pressure we put on our body's organs.

After a while the body will reveal to you that something needs to be changed in what You are doing. If you still do not pick up on this information, your body will become less subtle with its message, and hit You right between the eyes with it.

In other words you will become unwell, sick, dis-eased. Your body is telling you that something needs to change Now! At this stage it is too late to simply 'change the fuse', for a quick fix.

Our aim here is to give You some tools to keep Your body maintained at a good level of health... prevention is far better than cure.

The best way to do neurolymphatic massage is simply to apply your hands and fingers to the area and rub, knead, and stimulate in a circular manner. If you think this is too difficult, it's not... You already do this, but without knowing it. If you have a headache you will automatically massage the painful area. In fact wherever you have an ache your hands already will be attracted to the area, holding and rubbing etc.

All we are saying here is to do this massage to certain areas of your body, every day to help prevent stress, tension and other problems. If you do this for a few minutes a couple of times each day, it will go a long way towards Your goal of Optimum Health. Do not try to improve things too fast by over massaging, go slow, a few minutes only each time to build up the relaxation effect for real benefits.

Of course there are many factors involved in Health... air, water, nutrition, exercise, relaxation, and mind power. All of these need to be examined and worked on for best results.

One of the first massage points You may want to use is in the central area of Your body. This area is regarded as the '2nd brain', as many of the body's functions are related to this area, known as the solar plexus.

If You place the fingers of both hands just under your ribcage, and push in and slightly up, you will find the right place. Add some pressure and rotate and massage the whole area. If there is some tension here (there often is) it will gradually be released.

Also remember to breathe deeply as this will help release any tension and stress in the solar plexus. This is a powerful technique, You will reap the rewards if it is done on a regular basis... daily!

Your centre of gravity, balance point, will be found 2 finger distance below your navel (belly button). The Japanese call this... Hara, Seika-no-itten, one point, etc.

Place the tips of the fingers, of both hands on this point, add some pressure and massage. Rotate the massage in a circular manner, for a few minutes, a couple of times each and every day for best effects.

Another practise using this point you may want to try is to put your mind there, focus and concentrate your thoughts in this area, especially useful to control extremes of emotion... anger, sadness etc. As used by the world famous Hypnotherapist and NLP expert Paul McKenna

In Aikido we are taught to have our minds focused on the one point constantly. This gives us the ability to react quickly to fast changing circumstances in our environment, to be able to stay in control.

Here we will look at a simple but truly magical way to let go of Your stress, tension and dis-ease, for the prevention of ill health.

It is widely accepted that stress is the root cause of a majority of your ailments. It stops your body from its work of healing itself by tightening muscles and constricting the blood vessels.

The circulation becomes partly blocked and the heart has to work harder than it should. It also affects the hormonal balance by restricting the natural work of the body's organs.

The ability to truly relax is getting more and more difficult to achieve. We are bombarded with tasks we need to perform, and the list is never clear. There is always something we should be doing in order to make some 'Space and Time to Relax' and let-go of the cares of the world.

The way we are encouraged to set up our lifestyles is a disaster waiting to happen. It seems we are supposed to be running around like head-less chickens, not knowing whether we are coming or going.

Of course we very rarely find that space... BUT you have to say to yourself 'What are my essentials?' and 'what can I drop from my life?'

We recommend You act on this information and simplify your lifestyle, so that you can 'Make Time for You' and finally relax - see below...

How to Deal with Verbal Aggression

There is a very simple way of releasing negative emotions that you have collected during your life so far. These emotions are stored in your subconscious mind and carried with you everywhere you go. After a while they become heavy and difficult to drag around.

These negative emotions are collected every time you have experiences that you do not enjoy... shock, trauma, illness, whenever things dont go as You wish in your life.

Many people would say that to release some of this baggage you will need to have many expensive visits to a professionally trained therapist. Maybe a psychiatrist, doctor, counsellor, or healer etc.

Yes this can help reduce stress and tension in your life, but maybe you don't want to get attached or share your inner problems with a stranger, or matbe you just cannot afford it.

One way of overcoming this is to make sure you have a group of good friends you can fall back on in times of need. This way you can share your problems with them, and they will share theirs with you.

Wouldn't it be nice to just let-go and release all of this rubbish? To let go of the past and truly live in the present moment... Now!

A simple technique called ESR (emotional stress release) can be practised whenever you wish. It takes anything from a few minutes (small recent problems) to an hour (large long term problems). You can have a great effect with this simple exercise.

The following exercises are very easy to carry out. In fact all that is required is that you just work through the steps, one-by-one for it to have a good effect. Of course like everything in life, the more you put into it, the more benefits you will get out of it.

This is a Very Powerful Method and can release tearful emotions... you may cry, but this is a positive reaction that will help you to take a weight off your shoulders and benefit you right away... NOW!

There are neurolymphatic holding points on the forehead and on the back of the neck that we automatically use. If you are shocked or suddenly stressed you will put your hand across your forehead, this controls some of the emotion involved in the situation.

Also, when you ache, are tired, or stressed, your hand will often go to the back of your neck. In both of these examples, we can see this is a built-in response, and your body's natural reaction to aid the healing proccess.

Here are the exact instructions for you to try...

1 - Find somewhere comfortable to sit, that is private, where you won't be disturbed... keep your spine straight.

2 - Breathe deeply several times before you begin.

3 - Put your right hand across the front of your forehead, covering the whole area. (relax your elbow and shoulder)

4 - Put your left hand on the back of your neck, covering the whole area.

5 - Hold the Points on your head and neck and Focus your thoughts on a past negative feeling and try to experience it again.

6 - Ask yourself the following questions, and answer them, one-by-one...

7 - Where is it in my body?

8 - What size is it?

9 - What colour is it?

10 - Could I welcome whatever I am feeling?

11 - Could I let it go… just for now?

12 - Would I let it go? … When?

Repeat this process several times until the negative emotion and feelings are released... it is Powerful and Works!

Once you become used to this process, with practise, you can release negative feelings instantly as they arrive in your life.

In time you will become more relaxed, at ease and accept life as it is... positive and negative vibrations. Everything that comes to you in life, is for your development and experience. The skill is to learn the lesson and move forward positively.

We hope this is useful to you and remember, don't overlook the simplicity of this technique. It is one of the most powerful tools I have found after many years of research.
