Here we feature a series of Local and World Community News
3 brave women, who have been campaigning to create a better world for children, have each had their incredible efforts recognised by a truly deserving accolade: the World’s Children’s Prize for the Rights of the Child. A total of 17 million students at 37,000 schools from 92 countries, participated in this event and each year the numbers grow. A staggering 6.6 million of these children voted to determine who received the 2008 Global Friends Award. Somaly Mam from Cambodia, was selected for this prize because she has been working against all odds to liberate girls taken from their homes and forced to work against their will, as she herself was. Somaly has built three safe houses, where rescued girls are given food, healthcare, a home and the chance to go to school, as well as training for jobs when they are older. Above all, she gives them safety, warmth and love. Thanks to her, 3,000 girls now have a better life. An international child jury, consisting of children who are experts on the rights of the child through their own early life experiences as soldiers, refugees or street children, also selected Somaly Mam as the deserving recipient of this year’s World’s Children’s Prize. An Honorary Award was jointly given to Josefina Condori, from Peru, who for 15 years has campaigned for girls work-ing as maids in slave-like conditions in the city of Cusco, in an almost feudal Peru. Literally tens of thousands of young children have been given support from her drop-in centre, receiving food, shoes clothes, healthcare, a home, the chance to go to school, security and love. More than anything else, however, she works to ensure that they know their rights. Agnes Stevens from the United States was the second joint recipient. She has fought for America’s one million home-less children for more than 20 years. Her organisation has been helping 6 to 18 year olds, as well as their parents, with issues such as changing schools and retrieving vital lost documents, like school grades and birth certificates. They are given backpacks, school uniforms and supplies as well as money for the bus. At many shelters, Agnes has built learning rooms, with books, computers, drawing, colouring and writing materials, to give the children a quiet place to study and the chance to be ‘just kids’ again. This year’s prize ceremony was held at Gripsholm Castle, Sweden, where HM Queen Silvia helped children award the prizes. Participating in the celebration were some of the young people who have benefitted from the three women’s work, the youth-led jury and young musicians from South Africa, Vietnam and Sweden. THE WAY OF HARMONY
Aikido was founded by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969), who gained the skill to control many attackers at will. He was unique in his ability to express his understanding of universal principles and laws of nature. He was also a very spiritual person who spent years in study, prayer and contemplation. This is a martial art of Peace that develops in us an acute awareness of our surrounding environment, the ability to be calm, focused, relaxed and centred. Millions of Aikido practitioners around the World experience the positive benefits of... Aikido - The Way of Harmony
During this series we will focus on the key areas you need to look at in order to achieve success in your Aikido training.
This month I will give an overview of the main subjects we will be discussing in the Harmony Ezine. Of course, I will also include other important information that you will need on your individual journey to Aikido success.
It is important not to overlook these steps otherwise you may spend weeks, months, or even years in unnecessary training patterns.
There are many pitfalls you will want to avoid that can block your path to gaining peak performance levels and excellent Aikido skills. The coming newsletters will focus in depth on the following subjects...
1 - How To Choose Your Aikido Instructor. 2 - Focusing Your Mind On Aikido Training. 3 - Accumulating Aikido Techniques. 4 - Analyzing Aikido Posture and Form. 5 - Studying and Using Aikido Principles. 6 - Summary of Aikido Success Blueprint.
These are the main areas we will be spotlighting in this series, but many other important issues will also be covered, so stay tuned and buckle up for a fascinating ride!
There are several areas that will reduce the speed you can learn the art of Aikido. Some of them can block your path completely and stop you from achieving your ultimate goal. After all, the amount of effort to do it right, is very similar to, the amount of effort to do it wrong.
If you want to fast-track your Aikido training, then it is important to have a good level of health and fitness. (see my Optimum Health Secrets Ebook collection for more info).
So your fitness levels should be above average to speed up your Aikido development process. This will include your ability to truly relax, your flexibility, stamina, speed, and strength. These can all be vastly improved by regular and correct exercise.
I highly recommend... walking, swimming, cycling, jogging (rebounder), stretching, yoga, and tai chi as excellent ways to prepare yourself for focused Aikido Training.
If you do not have a good level of general health and fitness, then your Aikido training hours will not be focused on improving skill level, which will reduce your ability to learn the techniques, postures and principles.
We will tell you about many more of the pitfalls on your journey to Aikido Excellence through-out this series over the coming months, including your choice of instructor, so... stay in touch!
In my opinion, if you have made a decision to begin your Aikido Training programme, then it is essential to make a study of the art, and all of the possible paths you can take during your journey.
It will depend on your individual preferences as to which particular path you will choose. Remember once you have chosen the style of Aikido, and Instructor you will train with, then you may be with them for many years to come, so it is very important to make the right decision beforehand.
If you do not consider these details properly you may find yourself with regrets later. The following is a short overview of the possible paths you may decide to take on your Aikido journey...
The founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba, taught many different ways of understanding Aikido during his lifetime. He began with a hard, powerful Aiki-Jujutsu style all the way to the soft, flowing style. Bare in mind that his soft Aiki style was just as effective, in self-defence terms.
All of the following styles came directly from Morihei Ueshiba...
1 - Traditional Aikikai - as taught by the Ueshiba family. 2 - Ki Aikido - as taught by Koichi Tohei. 3 - Yoshinkan Aikido - as taught by Gozo Shioda. 4 - Iwama Aikido - as taught by Morihiro Saito.
There are many, many more styles available depending on your needs, but these are the main ones. Both Aikikai and Ki Aikido are more intellectual and thoughtful approaches to the art. Yoshinkan and Iwama Aikido are more hard, practical styles for self-defence purposes.
I recommend that you read and watch a selection of Aikido Books and Dvd's to help you decide what Aikido path is best for you. How will I know, I hear you ask?
Well what are you drawn to, there your answers will be found!
