An excellent way to 'experience' harmony and balance in our lives is to practise the Martial Art of Aikido. This is an Art of Peace that develops in us an acute awareness of our surrounding environment, the ability to be calm, focused, relaxed and centred.

Aikido is the way of harmony with universal energy. It was founded by Master MORIHEI UESHIBA, who gained the skill to control many attackers at will. He was also regarded as the most spiritual person in Japan and spent much of his later years in study, prayer and contemplation.

On the 1st August 2005 the UK Department of Health launched a consultation on proposals for a new modernised National Health Research Strategy. The views of research professionals, organisations, patients and the public are being sought on the future direction of health research for the Department of Health and the NHS in England.

The strategy aims to ensure the NHS supports the Government’s commitment to positioning the UK as the best place in the world for health research, development and innovation. The proposed changes include:

Modernising the way research in the NHS is funded - to ensure a transparent system of funding that more accurately reflects the levels of health research conducted by NHS Trusts. Establishing a set of Academic Medical Centres - to serve as the nation’s premier research hospitals and compete with other top clinical research institutes throughout the world. Creating the National Institute for Health Research - a virtual institute to work with the UK Clinical Research Collaboration to co-ordinate the research infrastructure of the NHS. This would bring together, for the first time, all elements of NHS and Department of Health research.

Health Minister, Jane Kennedy said:

"We want to create a health research system in which the NHS supports outstanding individuals, working in world-class facilities, conducting leading-edge research, focused on the needs of patients and the public.

This consultation document sets out our proposals for achieving this, placing patients at the centre of a system that focuses on quality, transparency, and value for money.

The changes proposed are radical. However, we believe that they are essential to create a health research system in which NHS support ensures the UK is the best place in the world for health research.

The proposed strategy has been developed by working closely with research professionals and organisations, but it will only be successful if it commands widespread support from all our stakeholders. Any changes to funding will need to be managed carefully, and we are proposing a transition period in order to minimise disruption.

The purpose of this consultation is to seek views from the wider research community and associated organisations so that we can create the greatest possible consensus about the way forward."

The web-based consultation will run for twelve weeks, closing on 21st October 2005.

1 - Inhale and Breathe in deeply, through the nose.

2 - Hold the in-breath for 5-10 seconds, while tensing and relaxing all of your muscles 3 times.

3 - Exhale and Breathe out deeply, through the mouth.

4 - Hold the out-breathe for 3-5 seconds and completely relax.

5 - Repeat the above exercise 3-5 times.

You now have a simple tool that is easy to apply and anytime you feel stress and strain in your life... breathe deeply and relax. The most obvious answers to our health problems are always simple and natural. In fact they are so close to us that we often overlook them for more complex methods.

Air - The Options...

We found that in our modern society we have created an environment that almost eliminates negative ions from the atmosphere. Pollution from car exhausts, air conditioning, cigarettes, overcrowding, electrical equipment, fluorescent lighting, man-made fibres in clothes and carpets, all create positive ions that lead to poor health.

Ions are gas molecules that carry an electrical charge by gaining or losing an electron. In nature they are generated by ultra-violet light from the sun, lightning and thunderstorms, the breaking of water by waves, waterfalls, mountain streams... even plants. Negative ion generators can be used for those not fortunate enough to live near mountains, seas, waterfalls etc.

For real health the aim is to get the maximum amount of oxygen into the body via the lungs. This can be achieved by consciously breathing more deeply in an environment that can boost the benefits. Go for a walk and find a place in nature away from the noise... a mountain, by the sea, a river or stream, in a forest or wood.

Walking is one of the most natural exercises to boost our vital life force. A 30 minute walk 3 times a week, in a natural environment will increase our positive energy by filling the lungs with good oxygen.

When we leave behind the noise of a busy society, we can also leave behind our personal problems, just for while. This can have a rejuvenating effect on our attitude and can positively motivate us. We can add to these powerful health benefits by opening the windows to our homes and circulating fresh air into the living environment.

Water - The Options...

1) Drink tap water and hope outdated treatment systems will protect us.

2) Drink bottled water which is available and fairly expensive.

3) Buy a home water purification system.

Water Softeners - remove the hardness, adding sodium through a process of ion exchange... not for drinking.

Water Filters - remove selected contaminants, usually through an activated charcoal filter, that must be replaced regularly. They do not remove nitrates, inorganic ions or bacteria.

Reverse Osmosis Units - separate water from minerals and chemicals using a semi-permeable membrane. Does not remove micro-biological impurities.

Water Distillers - simulate the natural cycle by boiling water to kill bacteria. As the water is vaporized, chemicals and minerals are left behind. The steam is condensed in a sterile condensation chamber. Considered to be the most effective method of water purification.

The UK Government Organic Action Plan is to double the proportion of UK organically grown food from 35% to 70% of the total UK retail market by the year 2010. All organic foods and products grown or made in the UK must carry a 'Soil Association' certificate.

What we eat is directly related to how we think, feel and act and the balance of nutrients is most important in preventing the development of dis-eases, some of which are life threatening.

Food provides energy and essential nutrients for the body: carbohydrates, proteins, fats, minerals, trace elements, and vitamins.
