Bird flu 'could kill 150m people' Experts fear birds will carry the virus across borders. A flu pandemic could happen at any time and kill between 5-150 million people, a UN health official has warned. David Nabarro, who is charged with co-ordinating responses to bird flu, said a mutation of the virus affecting Asia could trigger new outbreaks. Dr Nabarro told the BBC...

"It's like a combination of global warming and HIV/Aids 10 times faster than it's running at the moment"

But the World Health Organisation has distanced itself from the figure. The WHO spokesman on influenza, Dick Thompson, told a news conference in Geneva that the WHO's official estimate of the number of people who could die was between two million and 7.4 million. Mr Thompson said...

"There is obvious confusion, and I think that has to be straightened out. I don't think you will hear Dr Nabarro say the same sort of thing again,"

Bird flu has swept through poultry and wild birds in Asia since 2003. It has killed huge numbers of birds and led to more than 60 human deaths. Dr Nabarro said he stood by the figure drawn from the work of epidemiologists around the world.

"My reason for giving the higher figure is simply that I want to be sure that when this next flu pandemic does come along, that we are prepared for the worst as well as for the mildest," he said.

In an earlier interview with the BBC, he said the likelihood that the Asian virus could mutate and jump to humans was high.

"The consequences in terms of human life when the pandemic does start are going to be extraordinary and very damaging"

The comments came as agriculture ministers from the Association of South East Asian Nations (Asean) endorsed a three-year plan to combat the spread of the virus, and pledged $2m to fund research and training.

Dr Nabarro said the number of deaths from any future influenza pandemic would depend on where it started, how quickly it was discovered and the kind of response they got from governments.

We know that through our thoughts, we can influence the vibrations of energy around us. There are fundamental cosmic principles and natural laws we can use to unleash the creative force of spirit. We can implement these laws to act in line with our hopes and turn them into reality.


Create a comfortable environment, in a quiet place where you will not be disturbed. For 15-20 minutes practise deep breathing and relaxation. This will favour the receptivity and creative activity of the subconscious mind. Just before sleep is the best time to breathe deeply, relax and implant positive thoughts into the mind. Shallow breathing leads to tiredness, nervousness, anxiety and a reduced resistence to illness.


The goal we set for ourselves is more likely to come into fruition if it is not harmful to people around us. If what we wish has a bad effect on someone else, we are likely to come up against opposing forces. On the other hand good wishes for yourself and others are more likely to be fulfilled.


Our mental focus to see the goal come true, must be intense and enthusiastic. The object of our desire must become a certainty, and we should feel as though our desire has already been met. The more intense the focus on the vibrations of thought, the sooner our wishes will be met. It is the strongest thoughts that have the largest effect on us.


We cannot ask for something we are unable to believe in ourselves... 'expecting our wishes to be met immediately'. It is essential to use the progressive method that consists of mentally repeating a phrase several times a day until our wishes are met. With patience and persistence we will begin to see positive changes in our lives.

The Essence of Success

We must visualize and calmly maintain the image of our goal, imagine and feel it coming true. Create our own mental cinema where we can focus on the detailed image and different aspects of our desire. We should not allow the mind to wander aimlessly, our thoughts must be clear, precise and powerful. The power can be increased by breathing deeply and relaxing.


For example, if you wish for protection... 'I am confident, the cosmic force is protecting me and every day my life is becoming more peaceful'


We cannot hope to succeed if we make a timid half-hearted attempt. It is necessary to make the request enthusiastically and authoritatively with a feeling of joy and pleasure, as if the wish had already come true.


Work on building the image and repeating a positive phrase when in a relaxed and harmonious state of mind. If aggitated, disturbed, irritated, anxious, or impatient, we can breathe deeply and relax before focusing on our goals. It is better to form a dozen wishes in a positive state of mind than to make a hundred without conviction while the mind wanders.


By thanking the cosmic forces before we have received our wish demonstrates certainty and faith in its fulfillment. In this way we are stimulating our belief and connecting with powerful vibrational forces. It is very important to keep it to ourselves, and not talk too much about our projects as some people may sow seeds of doubt and discouragement.


There are many people who give a reasonable proportion of what they have. By giving a little the fear of losing it all does not arise. The gifts are given willingly, sincerely, with no ulterior motive or fear for the future. By exchanging with others through giving we make a connection in the universal current and we are rewarded by gifts from others in return.

If we have nothing of monetary value to give, then we can freely give kindness, smiles, love and support that will return to us in time. At any time we can make a deposit in the Universal Bank for a good return on our investment. To reap the rewards we must sow the seeds... and give our time by helping, advising, comforting and encouraging others.

There is a powerful and divine energy from which all things are made that permeates, penetrates, and fills the interspaces of the universe. A thought in this substance produces the thing that is visualised by the thought.

Humankind can form things in their thoughts, and by impressing their thoughts upon the divine substance, can cause creation. In order to do this we must pass from the competitive to the creative mind.

We can form a clear and definite mental image of the things we want to have, do, or become. By holding this image in our thoughts, while being deeply grateful to the universe, that our wishes are granted.

Frequently contemplating the vision with unwavering faith and devout gratitude adds power and intention. This proccess gives an impression to the formless that sets the creative forces in motion.

Gratitude unifies the personal mind with the universal mind to ensure our thoughts are received. Maintaining a deep and continuous feeling of gratitude will keep us united with the creative plane.

In order to receive, we must be active, consisting of more than filling our present place. Keep in mind the purpose and realisation of the mental image and do everything that can be done each day, taking care to do each act in a successful manner.

We must give everyone a use value in excess of the cash value received, so that each transaction increases and grows life. This way we can outgrow our present position and move on to greater success.

The success we receive from using the above formula will be in exact proportion to the definiteness of our vision, the fixity of our purpose, the steadiness of our faith, and the depth of our gratitude.
