Asking the Big Question... What Can We Do About Climate Change ?

Friends of the Earth UK, in their Big Ask campaign asks the public to put pressure on MPs to support a new Climate Change Bill that would force the reduction of CO2 emissions by three per cent every year.

This Bill, if it became law, would compel the Prime Minister to report annually on progress with tough sanctions for failure, including symbolic pay cuts for ministers. "Kyoto is an important first step, but tougher international action is crucial in order to combat climate change," said Catherine Pearce, Friends of the Earth climate campaigner. "The world around us is changing in dramatic and life-threatening ways. It’s time to weigh up the threat before it’s too late."

Three top environmental MPs put aside party differences to bring the Climate Change Bill to Parliament. The Former Labour Environment Minister, Michael Meacher, Conservative ex-Secretary of State, John Gummer and also Liberal Democrat Environment spokesperson, Norman Baker MP, sponsored the Bill requiring CO2 emissions to be cut by three per cent every year to 2050.

The annual targets, checks and balances also included in the Bill, would ensure that Governments actually deliver. Tony Juniper, Executive Director of Friends of the Earth said: "Acting now will enable the UK to show real inter-national leadership, something that the United States has failed to do so far.

All the main political parties agree that emissions must come down. Now they need to make it a legal obligation." The Government has pledged in its last two election manifestos to reduce C02 emissions to 20 per cent below the 1990 levels by 2010. Despite promises,the Government is off track as since it came to power in 1997, emissions have increased by 4.7 per cent.

President of The Royal Society, Sir Robert May, has warned that the climate change denial lobby, funded by the US oil industry, has moved to the UK. "On one hand we have the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the rest of the world’s major scientific organisations as well as the Government’s chief scientific adviser, all pointing to the need to cut emissions," he said. "And on the other, we have sceptics, including lobbyists, a sci-fi writer and the tabloid press who deny that the scientists are right. It is reminiscent of the tobacco lobby’s attempts to persuade us all that smoking does not cause lung cancer."

Already over 250 MPs have signed Early Day Motion 178 in support of the Climate Change Bill. Ultimately, over 400 MPs will need to be prepared to do the same.

Health & Beyond - 500 Years of Health Secrets

We have seen in our previous newsletter that it is important to know exactly what we want from our time here on Planet Earth. We must have a clear idea of our dreams, desires and life goals. The rewards of life come to those who do, not to those who merely read, talk or day-dream.

Deciding at the start of a year that you want to achieve a certain result by the end of that year, is an example of goal-setting. High-performance people set goals. Winners set goals. Losers never set goals. The reason why many people don't write goals is that it commits us to action.

This is why people do not set goals (write down their dreams). They cannot bear to have that piece of paper leering at them in silent accusation as the months tick by. Achieving wealth, health and happiness starts with having a dream. Today's dreams are surely tomorrow's realities.

Dreaming is a type of visualisation with passion on the things that we really want to be, to have or to do. If we do not achieve these things over the next ten years, we are going to be seriously disillusioned.

Here is a little exercise from master motivator Peter Thompson...

Imagine walking into a room and meeting the 'you' of five years from now. What will you be wearing? Where will you be living? What will your lifestyle be like? What car will you be driving? Will you be running a business? If so, how successful will you be? What will your net worth be? You really only have three choices here about how the 'you of the future' will look...

1. Somewhere in between how you are now, and a depressed, broke and scruffy tramp.

2. An exact clone of how you are now - absolutely nothing has changed in a decade.

3. A happier, wealthier, healthier version of the 'you of today'.

Having imagined how you will be in the next five years, here is a really neat trick to help you achieve it. Ask yourself the following questions...

"What do I need to achieve in the next 12 months in order to make my future dream a reality?"

"What do I need to do in the next month to start myself on this journey?"

"What can I do by next week to prepare myself for the journey?"

"What can I do right now, today, in order to start this process off?"

We need to dream, but this is not enough. Dreams are too large to realise in one hit. Our minds are finite, and so all large projects must be broken down into bite-sized chunks otherwise we become discouraged by the scale of the endeavour.

This is a 'secret' of successful people, each step is manageable, and can be completed in anything from a few hours to a few weeks.

Take a sheet of blank paper and write on the top...

"This is what I want to achieve in the next 12 months."

Now put the numbers 1-7 down the left-hand side of the paper and write Seven things you want to achieve over the next 12 months.

1. Dream - 2. Break your dreams down into bite-sized chunks.
3. Set weekly, monthly, yearly goals which move you closer to your goals.

The Tao of Abundance

The power of our thoughts lay a foundation and perspective from which we view life. There are many, many different viewpoints we can adopt and use to have rewarding life experiences. To become the person we wish to be, it is essential to take control of the mind and use it for our benefit.

92% of worries are unnecessary...

40% never happen, 30% have already happened and cannot be changed, 12% are needless about health, 10% petty miscellaneous, 8% genuine.

We are where we are and what we are because of the thoughts that dominate our mind's. We become what we think about and we get what we expect. Therefore we should act as the person we wish to become and expect the best.

Don't surrender to the push and pull of circumstances... Act not re-act.

Contemplate life, sow the seeds of an abundant harvest and everything we do will eventually come back to us. This is the law of cause and effect... Karma. Our lives are in our own hands, we can take control and start towards our goals now. Each day we have the opportunity to write another page in the story of our lives... happiness is an inside job.

Success is a progressive realisation of a worthy goal, so know what you want, dream it, create it and motivate it. Write down the seven most important things for you to do in order of importance. Then work on them one by one until completed.

Whatever you vividly imagine, ardently desire, sincerely believe and enthusiastically act upon... must inevitably come to pass.

Positive Mind Power

We can visualize and calmly maintain the image of our goal, imagine and feel it coming true. Create our own mental cinema where we can focus on the detailed image and different aspects of our desire. We should not allow the mind to wander aimlessly, our thoughts must be clear and precise.

Breathe deeply, and relax. When we are calm and relaxed, it becomes easier to concentrate, focus, and achieve our goals. We can liberate our natural talents and go with the flow for unlimited energy. An energy in motion tends to continue until acted upon by an outside force.

When it comes to problem solving we tend to get bogged down in the details and lose sight of the goal or aim. If we focus our thoughts on solving the problem, whilst removing our own opinion... then we can come to a rational conclusion. Looking at things more objectively, we can see the bigger picture. Less is more... simple and efficient.

This checklist will help You to prepare Your list of goals for 2006...

1. Make a list of Your desired Goals in order of importance.

2. Imagine them complete and list the necessary steps to get there.

3. Start with your first goal and focus your mind on its realisation.

4. Work through the steps, one-by-one until successful.

5. Take massive Action towards your goals.

6. Change your approach until successful.

7. It must change... You can and must change it.

8. Imagination... massive action... persistence.

9. Action is the Key to your success.
