Laughter is the Best Medicine.
by Steve Gabriel Nov 29, 2006 Positive News Issue 50

Everyone loves laughter, and one doctor in India has taken the concept to a new level. Dr Kataria originated the idea of laughter clubs while writing an article about laughter in 1995. His research led him to discover a large body of scientific literature describing the proven benefits of laughing on the mind and body.

According to Dr Kataria, laughter is a positive and powerful emotion that has all the ingredients required for individuals to change themselves and change the world in a peaceful and positive way. It is a universal language, which has the potential to unite humanity.

Over a decade later, there are more than 5,000 clubs around the world that meet regularly. Dr Kataria’s School of Laughter Yoga organises teacher training courses, conferences and workshops.

In 1998 Dr Kataria created ‘World Laughter Day’. This celebration, which promotes a positive manifestation for world peace, is intended to build up a global consciousness of friendship via laughter. Celebrated every first Sunday in May, this year it drew more than 100,000 people.

The unique concept of this idea is that anyone can laugh in a group for 15-20 minutes without depending on a great sense of humour, jokes or comedy. The practice combines very simple laughing exercises and gentle yoga breathing with group laughter.

The best time for a laughing session is between 6am and 7am. Dr Kataria says: "The advantage of laughter in the morning is that it keeps you in good spirits throughout the day. It energises your body and charges you with happiness."

Aikido was founded by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969), who gained the skill to control many attackers at will. He was unique in his ability to express his understanding of universal principles and laws of nature. He was also a very spiritual person who spent years in study, prayer and contemplation.

An excellent way to 'experience' harmony and balance in our lives is to practise the martial art of Aikido. This is an art of Peace that develops in us an acute awareness of our surrounding environment, the ability to be calm, focused, relaxed and centred. Millions of practitioners around the World experience the positive benefits of Aikido - The Way of Harmony

In this series we turn the spotlight on the most up-to-date ideas on Optimum Nutrition, What are the most powerful superfoods, how to absorb the nutrients from your food, why minerals are so important, and the spiritual properties of food... stay tuned !

The secret of vital, trouble-free health is hidden in certain small elements in the body called minerals. These are natural healing agents present in such small quantities that our supplies are easily exhausted.

Science has proven that these minerals are life itself, and without them our tissues and organs weaken and waste away.

Mineral defficiencies may bring on painful backaches, muscle fatigue, nervous tension, stomach upset, poor circulation and a host of other ailments.

We can restore ourselves to optimum health using mineral-rich foods that fight arthritis, high blood pressure, and many other ailments. Sufficient minerals of all types in the diet will help secure and maintain excellent health.

The Science of optimum nutrition today is firmly established as one of the chief branches of preventative medicine. The function of minerals, in trace quantities in the diet, have a great influence in the conversion of foods we eat to give maximum benefit to our well-being.

500 Years of Health Secrets

There are endless ways in which minerals work in the body, but the prime magical functions that they perform are as follows...

1. Protein, the building blocks of the body cannot be formed without the presence of calcium, nitrogen and sulfer.

2. The entire digestive system relies upon the vagus nerve, which cannot function without potassium.

3. Vitamins cannot work unless minerals are present. For example vitamin B12, needed for strong blood flow, requires the presence of cobalt.

4. Minerals are needed to combine with some vitamins to remove gaseous waste products, particularly cobalt.

5. Since the insulin molecule contains zinc, and diabetes results from an insulin shortage, it is possible that a zinc shortage may be involved with this ailment.

6. Minerals influence muscular contraction and also dominate the ability to making the nerves respond.

7. Minerals have the power to control body liquids and to permit other nutrients to pass efficiently into the bloodstream.

8. Blood coagulation is controlled by a mineral action. This means that bruises, cuts, scratches, wounds etc. must have minerals for the healing process.

9. Our alertness, youthful zest, energy, and thought power, all require minerals like... manganese, copper, cobalt, iodine, zinc, magnesium and phosphorus for maximum efficiency.

10. Minerals in the bloodstream act to create a germ-killing action, and help to create anti-biotics directly within the body's system.

11. Minerals are essential for strong bones and teeth, which are composed of 95% calcium and phosphorus. There are about 18 other minerals involved that act in combination.

We are what we eat and assimilate. A correct mineral-rich diet helps condition us for optimum health. The healthier we are the better we can resist illness and disease.

There is no escaping the truth that all elements work together. A shortage of just one mineral can disrupt the harmony and balance of the body's systems. While there are many minerals, all of which are vital, the 'Magic 14' rule and dominate over all others.

If you eat the proper foods and supplements containing these 14 minerals, you will also be feeding yourself the lesser known trace elements.

1. Calcium must have vitamins D, A, C, and phosphorus in order to function. Most of the calcium is found in our bones and teeth, a tiny 1% circulates in our body fluids and tissues. It is needed for blood clotting, to activate enzymes and regulate fluid passing through the walls of our cells. It is vital for correct nerve function.

A defficiency may cause cramps, convulsions, heart palpitations, osteoporosis (brittle bones), fractures, and rickets.

Prime sources of calcium are all dairy and milk products, and green vegetables (brocolli, kale, string beans etc.)

2. Phosphorus is found in all of the cells of the body. About 66% is in the bones in the form of calcium phosphate. About 33% is in the soft tissue as organic and inorganic phosphate. It influences the protein, carbohydrate and fat balance, stimulates muscular contraction, secretion of glandular hormones, nerve impulses, and kidney function.

A defficiency may cause appetite and weight-loss, nervous disorder, mental tiredness, and general fatigue - Avoid white sugar foods.

Prime sources are almost all foods, so defficiency may be linked to too much iron, magnesium or aluminium.

3. Iron is essential to all body cells and tissues for life-giving oxygen. It is needed to form haemoglobin in the red blood cells and influences protein. Iron must have calcium and other nutrients in order to function properly. It carries oxygen to the brain to make it work correctly, and aids respiration.

A defficiency can lead to anaemia, a sick skin pallor, poor memory, inability to think clearly, sore mouth, nd acracked lips.

Good food sources are egg yolks, green leafy vegetables, mollasses, plumbs, and sun dried raisins.

4. Iodine - There are about 25 milligrams in the body, 2/3rds in the thyroid gland and a 1/3 in blood and tissues. It stimulates the thyroid to regulate the metabolism and energy. It is needed to utilize fat and influence other nutrients.

A defficiency causes impairment of the mind and body, slow mental reaction, heart palpitations, nervousness, irritability, obesity, etc.

Good food sources are all sea foods, kelp (seaweed) onions etc.

5. Sodium helps to maintain a normal water level balance between cells and fluids. Encourages nerves to repond to stimulation, and provides strength to muscles to help them contract. It helps to make other blood minerals more soluble and prevents clogging the bloodstream.

A defficiency may cause stomach and intestinal gas, weight loss, muscle shrinkage, carbohydrates cannot be changed to fat for digestion etc.

It is found in sea foods, carrots, chard and dandelion leaves etc.

6. Potassium is a balancing mineral that works with sodium to normalise the heart-beat and feed the muscles. It joins with phosphorus to send blood to the brain and stimulates the kidneys to dispose of body waste, and is essential to the blood.

A defficiency may cause constipation, nervous disorder, insomnia, slow and irregular heart-beat, and muscle damage.

Good food sources are citrus fruits, watercress, mint leaves, green peppers, blackstrap mollasses, figs etc.

7. Magnesium is the cool, alkaline, refreshing, sleep-promoting mineral. It keeps you calm and cool on hot days and relaxes the nerves. There is about 70% in the bones, and 30% in the soft tissue and blood. It acts as a starter for some of the chemical reactions within the body.

Defficiencies make the blood vessels expand, the heart beat faster, and irritability etc.

Food sources include figs, lemons, grapefruit, almonds, oil-rich nuts and seeds, apples, and celery.

8. Copper must be present to convert iron into haemoglobin. It influences tyrosine, an amino-acid and also utilises vitamin C.

Defficiency may cause deformities, anaemia, easy bone fractures, skin sores that will not heal, general weakness and impaired breathing.

Food sources include almonds, dried beans, peas, wholewheat, prunes, egg yolks, and shrimp.

It causes the liver to secrete bile, maintain overall body balance, influences brain power, helps maintain hair and nails.

Food sources include fish, eggs, cabbage, lean beef, dried beans, brussel sprouts.

10. Silicon is found in hair, muscles, nails, cellular walls and connective tissues. It joins with other minerals to create tooth enamel and build strong bones.

A deficiency is seen as skin flabbiness, chronic fatigue, and eyes that are dull and glazed.

Good food sources include buckwheat, mushrooms, carrots, tomatoes, liver, whole grains and lentils.

11. Zinc is made in the pancreas where it helps in the storage of glycogen, which produces energy. It stimulates vitamin action and helps the intake of oxygen and removal of carbon dioxide and toxic waste. It is part of a stomach enzyme that helps food to be absorbed.

A defficiency may cause fatigue and laziness. It can be found in liver and other mineral-rich foods.

12. Manganese works with the B complex vitamins to overcome laziness, sterility and marital weaknesses. It helps to build strong bones, is found in the liver and is used for digestive enzyme absorption. It helps build resistance to ailments, strong nerve health, and promotes milk formation in expectant mothers.

Found in green leaves, peas, beets, egg yolks, whole grains, and sunflower seeds, etc.

13. Chlorine works by cleaning out toxic waste products from the system. It acts by stimulating the liver to act as a filter for waste substances. It stimulates hydrochloric acid to break down tough, fibrous foods, helps keep joints and tendons youthful, and distribute hormones by the endocrine glands.

A defficiency may cause hair and teeth loss, poor muscular contraction, and improper digestive power.

Good food sources include kelp, dulse, sea greens, leafy greens, rye flour, and olives.

14. Fluorine helps maintain tooth enamel but too much can cause abnormal an unsightly teeth. Minute amounts are evenly distributed throughout the tissues. If taken in excess (fluoridated water), bones may become weak with an adverse reaction to internal organs. Found in many other mineral rich foods and mult-vitamin/mineral supplements.
