A New Approach to World Peace

Jun 12, 2007 Positive News Issue 52 All across India, thousands of children have been writing heartfelt letters to the students of Pakistan, and thousands of children from Pakistan have been replying. Friends Without Borders are now inviting every school in both countries to take part and join this historic heart-to-heart experiment.

The idea is simple: writing a letter will leave deep and lasting impressions that will help to humanize the other and be the seeds that promise to mature into a safer and friendlier world.

From this original idea, sprang the World's Largest Love Letter. Written by the children of India to the children of Pakistan, this now famous collection of kind words is massive! Bigger than a football field, it measures 240 by 360 feet. It is so big that it would not even fit into its intended resting place the huge Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium so they had to leave the border pieces off.

Written in Urdu, English and Hindi, it reads: Dear Children of Pakistan, Let's join hearts in friendship. Together we can make a better world - The Children of India.

Thousands were bused in to view the gargantuan letter and asked to write along a yellow strip. On the return home, the yellow strip, which was 1,008 feet in length, was laid out on the ground. Named The Golden Bridge of Friendship and covered with thousands of messages, it stretched from inside Pakistan, all the way through the Wagah Border, which is known as No Man's Land, and right across into India itself.

Friends Without Borders are also organising a major historic Independence Day Concert in August. Musicians and celebrities will come together across the India-Pakistan border to help lead the children of both countries into a new era of friendship and cultural interaction.

Dil se Dil, the Independence Day Friendship Celebration, is a celebration of our past, say the organisers. It also acknowledges our shared history while recognising that these two great countries are pursuing separate national destinies. Dil se Dil is a celebration of our present, displaying our common humanity. It is a celebration of our future, demonstrating that mutual dreams of much more peaceful, open, collaborative relations are indeed close at hand.

AIKIDO
THE WAY OF HARMONY

Aikido was founded by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969), who gained the skill to control many attackers at will. He was unique in his ability to express his understanding of universal principles and laws of nature. He was also a very spiritual person who spent years in study, prayer and contemplation.

This is a martial art of Peace that develops in us an acute awareness of our surrounding environment, the ability to be calm, focused, relaxed and centred. Millions of Aikido practitioners around the World experience the positive benefits of... Aikido - The Way of Harmony

SUMMARY OF THE
POWER OF SOUND SERIES

KOTODAMA
CHANTING THE SOUND SPIRIT

'In the beginning was the word' and from that word 50 pure sounds appeared as vibrations of various concentrations that are seen as sound, colour and form. These sounds are surrounded by cosmic energy that is activated to sustain creation.

Morihei Ueshiba, founder of the martial art of Aikido and a follower of the Omoto-kyo religious sect, devoted many years to the study and practice of kotodama, over time formulating his own version of the discipline which he incorporated into Aikido.

In Aikido kotodama theory, the universe originated from a mysteriously dense point. A concentration of the vibration 'SU'. This energy extended circularly into the sounds u-u-u-yu-mu and expanded virtically into the sounds a-e-i-o-u.

The tension between these sounds gave birth to spirit/matter, fire/water, yin/yang and evolved into the 75 kotodama that maintain existence. This cosmic description is very similar to the big bang theory favoured by physicists and was further detailed by Morihei Ueshiba as... "one source, four spirits, three elements, and eight powers"

Part of the kotodama used by Morihei involved Hara (abdomen), indicating that heaven is not up in the sky but in the centre of the Human Being, the pit of the stomach. He said...

" Source of all,
origin of the seventy five (kotodama),
merciful teacher of the path of Aiki "

As a Shinto Shaman, a mystic, and peaceful warrior, Morihei was convinced he was protected by guardian spirits, after he had a mind-shattering experience and vision in his early forties. After he recovered from the shock of this experience he found he had super-human strength.

At the core of the Ueshiba kotodama system lies the intonation and sound of the nuclear syllable... SU.

SU is representative of the absolute center of the material realm - the very core of existence - the beginning of all things. It is the essence of that which existed at the precise moment of the creation of the Universe.

Other primary syllables include...

YU - signifying the affirmative: 'yes', is so', 'something'

MU - signifying the negative: 'no', 'is not', 'nothing'.

and the vowel-sounds: A-O-U-E-I:

A - signifying: 'moving up' - is voiced centered in the throat & mouth.

O - signifying: 'moving down' - is voiced centered near the heart.

U - signifying: 'returning to self' - is voiced deep in the hara

E - signifying: 'branching out' - is voiced in a way so as to be felt radiating throughout the body.

I - signifying: ..'the life force' - is voiced so that it vibrates powerfully & eminates/projects outwards from the body.

General Instructions for Kotodama Practice

Sit in the traditional Japanese zazen posture (or on an upright chair, with back straight, feet flat on the ground) - with hands palms down, resting on your thighs, or palms up, thumbs gently together.

Focus your attention in your hara, at the area known as seiko tanden
(a couple of inches below the navel).

Clear and still the mind.

Focus on the moment - there is ONLY the moment.

Draw the breath smoothly, steadily and easily in through the nose, then vocalise the kotodama as you breathe out through the mouth.

In a low and deeply resonant voice, intone each kotodama slowly, strongly - with total concentration and unity of body, mind and spirit.

Pronounce each 'word-sound' distinctly, separately - do not run or slur them together. Let each 'word-sound' fill your whole body - vibrating throughout every molecule - every atom.

Be aware of the resonance extending out throughout your aura into the very air about you.

POWER OF SOUND
SERIES SUMMARY

WORDS OF POWER

Words vibrate a powerful energy that influences you and all around you. Your choice of words says a lot about you and whether or not you will achieve your goals in life. The power of language can make it possible.

Just as colors and numbers can be associated with a vibrational frequency, so can sounds and words. Every letter of the alphabet can be associated with a number and every number (and every colour) can be associated with a musical note.

When letters are strung together to form a specific sound or word, the word is "charged" in a sense, with a specific frequency that is more than the sum of its parts, and that word influences all who think, read, speak or hear it. Words are even further charged with power as humans attach certain emotions and intentions.

If words have vibrational frequency, and the higher frequencies attract good stuff to you, then it makes sense to opt for using clear specific language. How else can you clearly and specifically direct the flow of energy around you to create exactly what you want.

Spells and curses, blessings and invocations are ways of invoking the power of words, and all who teach the ceremonial use of language will teach also the need to be exceptionally clear and specific in any incantation, chant or prayer.

We invoke the real power of language when we are clear and concise in our choice of words. The more specific you are with the words you use, the more clearly focused is the energy, the root of every success.

How many words do you say aloud every single day - Ten thousand ?

And how many words do you say to yourself when you are talking to yourself – your conscious mind chatters on almost continuously asking questions, chattering idly, commenting on everything that is happening, worrying, and so on. What most people don’t realise is the effect these words have on you.

An affirmation can be simply as uplifting as... "I'm very happy at this moment!" or as determined as "I'm willing to do whatever is necessary to succeed!"

Try it for yourself right now. Choose a positive message you want to tell yourself. Then stand up, look upwards, head back, throw your arms up, and shout it out loud. You've just discovered how powerful words can be.

Words have the power to induce someone to laugh, to cry, to be kind, to be loving, to be cooperative, to buy, Or be unkind, angry, and irrational.

THE POWER OF
CHANTS & MANTRAS

The Mantra's purpose is to assist your mind to focus when it is scattered. By chanting mantras (sacred sound), we effortlessly discard the stress, burdens, suffering and pain generated by our modern life.

They are good for everyone to practise, especially those with perfectionist natures and overly-active minds. Mantras heal us mentally, emotionally and physically, affecting the mind and the body's systems.

Chanting is a way of joyfully offering up our prayers for ourselves and all those we care for. As we sweetly sing the powerful sounds of the Ancient Wise Ones, the limited ego, with all of its illusions and fears, dissolves.

A mantra can be as simple as the single syllable "OM" or "AUM". It is a word or group of words - sound vibrations - that clear the mind of debris; When first practicing, the mantra can be spoken, and as we concentrate we can begin mental repetition.

As with all types of meditation practices the practice itself is not the goal; the goal is a calm mind and relaxed body, so that harmonious thoughts more easily come to mind followed by their product of kind actions.

Mantra chanting is easily practiced anywhere, as when repeated mentally, no one can see what we are doing. It is one method for regaining and maintaining peace during stressful times. When we are feeling stress, a few moments of mantra meditation can clear away the dust obstructing the view of a good resolution. And, upon lying down for sleep, mantra repetition can calm the mind, letting the body relax.

You can chant Mantras at your altar, your favourite part of the home, post the sacred text around your space, recite them at doorways or any place that has a negative presence to it. Every note of sacred sound feeds the atmosphere of your living and working space.

There are no hard-and-fast rules for chanting. The most wonderful thing about mantra meditation is that you may chant anywhere... at home, at work, driving in the car, or riding on the bus or subway, at any time.

Personal meditation, where one chants alone on 108 prayer beads, is called japa. The traditional way is to hold the beads in your right hand and move each bead between your thumb and middle finger, moving one bead with each prayer or mantra. You can also use thumb and forefinger.

Chanting on beads is especially helpful, for it engages the sense of touch in the meditative process and helps you concentrate even more on the sound of the mantra. You may want to chant japa indoors, but you can chant walking along the beach or hiking in the mountains.

If you chant sitting down, you should assume a comfortable position (not Iying down or slouching, for there's always the tendency to fall asleep). You can chant as loudly or as softly as you like, but it's important to pronounce the mantra clearly and loudly enough to hear.

The mind may have a tendency to wander off to other matters when you chant, for the mind is flickering and unsteady, always looking for something new and pleasurable to absorb itself in.

If your mind wanders gently bring it back to the transcendental sound vibration. It won't be difficult, because the mind is easily satisfied when absorbed in the divine sound of the mantra.

By using prayer beads, mantra repetition becomes supremely easy and you will find that it instills in you a sense of refuge, connecting you to a place of peace within you. The ever-busy mind can get easily side-tracked and prayer beads provide a natural and soothing way of offering hundreds of thousands of repetitions without even realizing or straining.

The OM or AUM Chant

If there is no religious preference then the sound vibration 'OM' is a universally recognized mantra. If using 'OM' draw the sound out like this... ooooom The AUM Chant ommmmm with an emphasis on the last part. To use in conjunction with breathing take an in breath, and then on the out breath repeat 'OM' remembering to draw out the ending.

Chanting the OM (AUM) mantra will bring you to a state of purity in body, mind and soul.

The Om is composed of three letters, A, U, and M. These symbolize the practitioner's impure body, speech, and mind; they also symbolize the pure exalted body, speech, and mind of a Buddha.

The HU Chant

Chanting HU (pronounced "hue") aloud or to yourself can open your heart to God's love and transform your life. This daily practice can help you experience more love, joy and spiritual freedom.

You can also try chanting this inwardly when faced with challenging situations. HU is a ancient name for God and is a very uplifting chant when singing it with a group of people.

SUMMARY OF THE
POWER OF SOUND SERIES

SOUND VIBRATIONS
FOR HEALING

Each part of our body, each organ, our muscles, skin and bones give off different frequencies or sounds, in fact, as you breathe, eat, or read this article, you are emitting a sound as individual as your fingerprints.

If your life-style, thoughts, words actions and so on are positive and they nourish you, then fine. It is nature’s way to balance the body as best it can, and we are continually doing a wonderful dance with our body chemistry, temperature, cycles and rhythms to keep us functioning well.

However, if you are repeatedly exposed to - lets call it, ‘negative energy’ (poor diet, unhappy relationships, environmental and chemical stresses, and so on) it can literally pull the body out of tune.

Sometimes the body gets so used to being out of tune, it forgets the ideal energy blueprint it used to enjoy - and adopts a less healthy blueprint which eventually results in imbalance, illness and dis-ease.

Just as there is an energy blueprint for the organs, bones etc, there is also one for the chakra system. The chakras work as little pump houses to transfer energy throughout the body via channels called meridians.

The chakras take subtle energy to the vital organs bones and skin, feeding the body with life-force, prana, chi etc. A fully functioning chakra allows for the energy to flow through the body unhindered, therefore resulting in a health and harmony of mind, body & spirit.

Water is a very good carrier for sound, which is proven by the fact that whale and dolphin song can be heard for miles under water, yet doesn’t carry very far in the air. We are made up of 70-80% water and therefore sound literally goes right through us, gently but effectively penetrating at a cellular level. Balancing, nurturing and healing mind, body and spirit.

The gentle tones of healing sound gently remove blockages in the energy system, therefore allowing the free-flow of prana or chi to be resumed. The end result being the body heals itself.

Many tools have been used since the beginning of time to create music, and to aid healing - gongs, Tibetan bowls, didgeridoos, rattles and drums. More modern sound therapy tools are tuning forks, chimes, resonator plates, sound discs, and sound tables. All play an important role in healing.

The human ear can hear sound when it vibrates between 20 and 20,000 cycles per second. We also hear and perceive sound by skin and bone conduction. We are sensitive to sounds in ways that most people do not even consider.

Modern science has shown that in the human body, auditory nerves are linked to our sense of proportion and balance, and have the power to shift our energy to the "center", bringing about a feeling of connection.

The body is an orchestra receiving and producing a symphony of sounds, chemicals, electrical charges, colors, and images. When we are in good health, the instruments in our orchestra perform fluidly and in tune. When we are sick or ailing, one or more instrument is flat or sharp, unstrung, deficient in tone.

Any object living or non-living, real or a product of someone's imagination, has its unique energetic vibrational field. When two vibrational fields meet, they strengthen each other if they vibrate in harmony, and weaken if there is vibrational disharmony. Illnesses have negative vibrations.

Music has been used in birthing, counseling, and massage rooms, during physical therapy, in helping stroke, burn, and cancer victims, with brain damaged and multiply handicapped children, and in psychiatric hospitals, addiction treatment centers, and prisons.

To the public, music therapy is generally an unknown field. Music holds a prominent position in our society and educational systems as a performing, entertaining art. Historically, music has been a primary tool for spiritual and physical alignment, used at political and social gatherings, as well as for family, civic, or educational ceremonies.

Truly religious music awakens and stimulates the spiritual seeds that exist in every one of us, waiting to come to life. It lifts us above the level of everyday consciousness, up into those higher realms where light, love and joy reign. The healing properties of music were well known by the ancient civilizations, and they deliberately used it for such purpose.

Pythagoras based musical education in the first place on certain melodies and rhythms that exercised healing to human actions and passions. He applied the same means to the curing of diseases of both body and mind.

Plato accorded just as much importance to music as a powerful means of mental therapy and education. Aristotle mentions among the various functions of music that of emotional healing.

The resonant quality of sounds is produced by the vibratory characteristics of an instrument. It is the pattern of frequencies produced, but not heard as separate pitches, that give an instrument or voice its distinctive tone quality.

There is a sacred syllable AUM (OM). Aum is intoned in the following manner: "Ah-Ooh-Mm." The vowel Ah is intoned on an outgoing breath; then, breathing smoothly, without pause, add the Ooh sound to the Ah; then close the lips gently to form an Mm sound.

WORDS OF WISDOM
QUOTES

" We are made wise not by the recollection of our past, but by the responsibility for our future "

George Bernard Shaw

" Science is organized knowledge. Wisdom is organized life "

Immanuel Kant

" Besides the noble art of getting things done, there is the noble art of leaving things undone. The wisdom of life consists in the elimination of non-essentials "

Lin Yutang

" Knowledge is a process of piling up facts; wisdom lies in their simplification "

Martin Fischer

" It is a thousand times better to have common sense without education than to have education without common sense "

Robert Green Ingersoll

" It's so simple to be wise. Just think of something stupid to say and then don't say it "

Sam Levenson

" We learn wisdom from failure much more than from success. We often discover what will do, by finding out what will not do; and probably he who never made a mistake never made a discovery "

Samuel Smiles

" These days people seek knowledge, not wisdom. Knowledge is of the past, wisdom is of the future "

Vernon Cooper

" Six essential qualities that are the key to success: Sincerity, personal integrity, humility, courtesy, wisdom, charity "

William Menninger

" Without courage, wisdom bears no fruit "

Baltasar Gracian

" It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change "

Charles Darwin

A collection of quotations from Ralph Waldo Emerson who is perhaps the most widely quoted American writer.

" Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could; some blunders and absurdities have crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; you shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense "

" Is it so bad, then, to be misunderstood? Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever took flesh. To be great is to be misunderstood "

" When Nature has work to be done, she creates a genius to do it "

" The reward of a thing well done, is to have done it "

" What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us "

" Whatever you do, you need courage. Whatever course you decide upon, there is always someone to tell you that you are wrong. There are always difficulties arising that tempt you to believe your critics are right. To map out a course of action and follow it to an end requires some of the same courage that a soldier needs. Peace has its victories, but it takes brave men and women to win them "

" It was a high counsel that I once heard given to a young person, ‘Always do what you are afraid to do "
