Arun Aikido Club
Unique Aikido Demonstration!

This month, I was going to discuss the final results of our PEMF test.

Unfortunately, there are some elements of these tests that are still incomplete. I will have to postpone the results until next month...

Sorry :(

Instead, in this edition of my Harmony Ezine, I will tell you about a unique Aikido demonstration that the Arun Aikido Club gave recently.

On Sunday 4th August we performed a 40 minute aikido demonstration at the Hotham Park Country Fair in Bognor Regis, West Sussex UK. This special event is held every year and is visited by thousands of people.

Hotham Park is a beautiful natural park on the south coast that is full of wildlife like rabbits, birds, squirrels, etc. It is a thriving place that hosts many outdoor events throughout the year... none bigger than the Country Fair.

We at the Arun Aikido Club like to take the opportunity to promote the wonderful art of Aikido and encourage new students to get involved. So almost every year we offer an Aikido demonstration for them.

For a few years now my daughter Natasha, who teaches our junior classes, has run Arun Aikido Club promotions and events. She spent weeks and dozens of emails to the event co-ordinator and finalised the details.

We were also offered the opportunity for one of our members to give a microphone presentation during the aikido demonstration.

I spent weeks writing a speech and gave a copy to the presenter Bradley (Natasha's Husband). This gave him a few weeks to practise it. Meanwhile, our students practised the chosen techniques.

Why So Much Effort?

After all, its only a demonstration... right!

Years ago, one of my instructors impressed on me the importance of public demonstrations. He said that Aikido must be seen to be an effective martial art, so the techniques must be Powerful and Dynamic.

He also said that the art of Aikido must be seen to be a creative, and positive force for good. This is why I insist that the Arun Aikido Club spend so much time and effort on public Aikido demonstrations.

We Encountered a Problem?

Instructors, students, family, friends were prepared... we were ready to give an impressive demonstration.

We had distributed hundreds of handouts to the local community stating the time and place. I arrived at the Hotham Park Country Fair event early and was given a programme of scheduled times.

A sudden feeling of dread came over me as I noticed a glaring error!

Instead of an Aikido demo at 1:30pm, the programme said that there was to be a Karate demo at 1pm. No time slot for the Arun Aikido Club at all :(

Natasha was really annoyed, that after all her efforts the organisers had made such a bad mistake!

After tracking down the event coordinator, we were informed the karate spot was incorrectly included in the programme and it was supposed to be an Aikido demo. But it was scheduled for 30 minutes earlier than planned.

I decided we had to make the best of it. After all aikido teaches us how to stay relaxed and be flexible in mind and body.

I told the organisers that we would begin our demo at 1:15pm (15mins early). I quickly asked several students to prepare the grass area, remove stones, twigs and any other debris that may cause injury.

The rest of us quickly went to my car to grab the demonstration mats.

Bradley announced over the microphone, which went to speakers all over the park, about the time change and for people to make their way over as our performance will begin 15 minutes early.

It was all a bit of a panic, but we were finally ready to perform.

Did The Aikido Demonstration Go Well?

Yes... it went very well, thanks for asking :)

Instructors and students gave an excellent performance, and the microphone presentation speech was perfectly timed.

It was a dynamic demonstration of aikido with a little audience partication. There were cheers, and lots of oohs and aahs as the techniques were applied.

What's Next for the Arun Aikido Club?

Thanks for asking!

Every year, in September we offer a unique Aiki Peace Seminar that gives students and the wider community an opportunity to celebrate peace.

In 2001, the United Nations declared September 21st as an International Day of Peace. On that day, every year, there are ceasefires in hundreds of conflicts around the world.

Many organizations worldwide celebrate that day with thousands of peace day events, and benefit concerts to focus the world's attention on love, peace and harmony.

This gives the Arun Aikido Club, a Unique Opportunity to increase public awareness of Aikido as a joyful practice of harmony and compassion. A seminar that teaches aiki principles to manage conflict and prevent violence.

Our next Aiki Peace Seminar is on Thursday 19th September 2019. You are most welcome to join us and b>Celebrate Peace :)
