Hospital meals shock!

Patients actually like hospital food (if it’s local, fresh and organic)

A pioneering partnership between the Soil Association and NHS trusts in Cornwall, UK is revolutionising hospital food. 'Over boiled, soggy and nasty' meals have been transformed into patient-pleasing menus that are providing good nutrition; boosting the local economy; cutting unnecessary food miles, and supporting sustainable farming and food production.

A fresh approach to hospital food summarises the remarkable achievements of the award winning Cornwall Food Programme which has succeeded in providing tasty hospital meals - made from fresh, local and organic ingredients - to patients without increasing costs, countering the alarming national picture of poor take-up of and inadequate nutrition from hospital meals.

The scandalous state of school dinners, as revealed by the Soil Association's Food for Life campaign and greatly boosted by Jamie Oliver's involvement, has received much media and public attention, leading to improvements. Hospital food has also been the subject of much public and political hand-wringing, but to date few significant or lasting improvements have been achieved – despite the government's much-hyped Better Hospital Food initiative, headed-up by food critic and broadcaster, Loyd Grossman.

In contrast, the Cornwall Food Programme is succeeding in:

Pleasing patients: National surveys show 37% of patients leave hospital meals because they look, smell or taste unappealing. In contrast, 92% of patients served through the Cornwall project describe the food on offer as 'very good' or 'excellent'.

Boosting the local economy: As well as providing fresher, more nutritious food by sourcing food locally the programme is supporting the local economy: 83% of the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust's 2006 food budget was spent with companies based in Cornwall, totalling £910,000. Previously 60% of the budget was spent outside Cornwall.

Cutting Food Miles: Overall the programme has cut annual food miles by 67%. Previously food was travelling 164,042 miles to reach patients, by switching to local suppliers that has been reduced to 53,596 miles.

Keeping to budget: all of this and more has been achieved without increasing costs overall, keeping within the Royal Cornwall Hospital's budget of £2.50 per day - showing local, fresh and organic meals could be served up by the NHS UK-wide.

HRH Prince Charles, as Royal Patron of the Soil Association and with his strong interest and support for the region through the Duchy of Cornwall, welcomed the success of the Cornwall Food Programme: "This shows what can be achieved within the very real constraints of NHS budgets and the rules governing public procurement contracts. Contrary to what some believe, it is generally the case that what is good for the environment is also good for our health, and good for business."

Peter Melchett, Soil Association policy director, said: "What has been achieved in Cornwall's hospitals is truly remarkable, but readily repeatable across the UK. The Cornwall Food Programme shows that the Soil Association's Food For Life targets of getting 75% unprocessed, 50% local and 30% organic ingredients into school and hospital food – could be served up by the NHS UK-wide, whilst keeping within the modest food budget of £2.50 per patient.

"The programme is delivering a triple-dose of benefits: decent food that helps patients recover; a boost to the local economy, sustaining the livelihoods of local fishermen, farmers and food producers, and a cut in food miles, so helping curb climate change that threatens the health of us all. The government should ensure this beacon of best practice is taken up by every hospital across Britain."

Mike Pearson, Cornwall Food Programme project leader, said: "It is my belief that NHS Trusts have a significant role to play within their local community and this is an example of a partnership that has benefited all concerned. What we see now is the ending of the first chapter, now that work has started on the construction of the Central Food Production Unit (CFPU) we will in the future be able to increase the number of local and organic food suppliers still further. "

Diet-related illness costs the economy up to £7.4 billion a year in medical care and working days lost.

A Royal College of Nursing (RCN) report revealed that nearly half of UK nurses (42 per cent) say they do not have enough time to ensure patients get good nutrition during their working day.

The NHS spends over £500 million on food every year, serving over 300 million meals in about 1,200 hospitals.

THE POWER OF
CHANTS & MANTRAS

The Mantra's purpose is to assist your mind to focus when it is scattered. By chanting mantras (sacred sound), we effortlessly discard the stress, burdens, suffering and pain generated by our modern life.

They are good for everyone to practise, especially those with perfectionist natures and overly-active minds. Mantras heal us mentally, emotionally and physically, affecting the mind and the body's systems.

Chanting is a way of joyfully offering up our prayers for ourselves and all those we care for. As we sweetly sing the powerful sounds of the Ancient Wise Ones, the limited ego, with all of its illusions and fears, dissolves.

This is an easy way to obtain peace of mind, but takes much practice. Chanting mantras is also used to make the intent of the mantra a physical reality. Energy naturally follows intent and thus the chanting of a mantra will eventually lead to the physical manifestation of the mantra.

Chanting affects your subtle body (electromagnetic energy field) which holds your consciousness. Your subtle body is made up of small vibrations and chanting directly affects the energy of your subtle body.

Mantras start a powerful vibration which corresponds to both a specific spiritual energy frequency and a state of consciousness in seed form. Over time, the mantra process begins to override all of the other smaller vibrations, which eventually become absorbed by the mantra. After a length of time which varies from individual to individual, the great wave of the mantra stills all other vibrations.

The more we chant, the more we find ourselves free of the chains of Karma from past lives, childhood and all the experiences that have challenged us up to the present moment, which produce imbalances.

With chants and songs from global traditions, we can all open the doors to our spiritual inheritance of Peace. So create time for chanting in your life and fill yourself with Peace.

Transcendental Meditation also known simply as 'TM' uses simple mantras as a meditative focus. TM was founded by the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

According to the TM website the practice can result in a number of material benefits such as relaxation, reduced stress, better health, better self image; but it can also benefit the world by reducing violence, crime and generally improve quality of life.

The founder was well versed in Hindu tradition, but TM attempts to separate itself from that tradition. Simple two syllable mantras are used.

Mantra practice has also been taken up by various New Age groups and individuals, although this is typically out of context, and from the point of view of a genuine Hindu or Buddhist practitioner lacks depth.

The mere repetition of syllables can have a calming effect on the mind, body and spirit. Mantra can be an effective way of changing your level of consciousness.

HOW TO
CHANT YOUR MANTRAS

A mantra can be as simple as the single syllable "OM" or "AUM". A mantra is a word or group of words - sound vibrations - that clear the mind of debris; When first practicing, the mantra can be spoken, and as we concentrate we can begin mental repetition.

As with all types of meditation practices the practice itself is not the goal; the goal is a calm mind and relaxed body, so that harmonious thoughts more easily come to mind followed by their product of kind actions.

Mantra chanting is easily practiced anywhere, as when repeated mentally, no one can see what we are doing. It is one method for regaining and maintaining peace during stressful times. When we are feeling stress, a few moments of mantra meditation can clear away the dust obstructing the view of a good resolution. And, upon lying down for sleep, mantra repetition can calm the mind, letting the body relax.

You can chant Mantras at your altar, your favourite part of the home, post the sacred text around your space, recite them at doorways or any place that has a negative presence to it. Every note of sacred sound feeds the atmosphere of your living and working space.

There are no hard-and-fast rules for chanting. The most wonderful thing about mantra meditation is that you may chant anywhere... at home, at work, driving in the car, or riding on the bus or subway, at any time.

In order to chant you do not need expensive props and paraphernalia, learn to stand on your head, or perform other difficult postures or breathing exercises. The only equipment you need is a tongue and ears, which you already have. The tongue simply has to vibrate the words, and the ears must hear it, a simple process.

The meditation business is flourishing these days. Modern-day "messiahs," "gurus," and "incarnations," with all varieties of mantras, are a dime a dozen, as eager customers flock to the feet of self-styled saviors.

If you are serious about spiritual life, you must come in contact with a true spiritual master and learn from them the science of God consciousness.

CHANTS & MANTRAS
THE METHODS

Personal meditation, where one chants alone on 108 prayer beads, is called japa. The traditional way is to hold the beads in your right hand and move each bead between your thumb and middle finger, moving one bead with each prayer or mantra. You can also use thumb and forefinger.

Chanting on beads is especially helpful, for it engages the sense of touch in the meditative process and helps you concentrate even more on the sound of the mantra. You may want to chant japa indoors, but you can chant walking along the beach or hiking in the mountains.

If you chant sitting down, you should assume a comfortable position (not Iying down or slouching, for there's always the tendency to fall asleep). You can chant as loudly or as softly as you like, but it's important to pronounce the mantra clearly and loudly enough to hear.

The mind may have a tendency to wander off to other matters when you chant, for the mind is flickering and unsteady, always looking for something new and pleasurable to absorb itself in.

If your mind wanders gently bring it back to the transcendental sound vibration. It won't be difficult, because the mind is easily satisfied when absorbed in the divine sound of the mantra.

One may chant japa at any time, but the Vedic literatures note that certain hours of the day are most auspicious for performing spiritual activities. The early morning hours just before and after sunrise are generally a time of stillness and quietude, excellently suited to contemplative chanting.

Many people find it especially helpful to set aside a certain amount of time at the same time each day for chanting. Start with one or two "rounds" a day, and gradually increase the number until you reach sixteen, the recommended minimum for serious chanters.

By using prayer beads, mantra repetition becomes supremely easy and you will find that it instills in you a sense of refuge, connecting you to a place of peace within you. The ever-busy mind can get easily side-tracked and prayer beads provide a natural and soothing way of offering hundreds of thousands of repetitions without even realizing or straining.

The OM or AUM Chant

If there is no religious preference then the sound vibration 'OM' is a universally recognized mantra. If using 'OM' draw the sound out like this... ooooom The AUM Chant ommmmm with an emphasis on the last part. To use in conjunction with breathing take an in breath, and then on the out breath repeat 'OM' remembering to draw out the ending.

Chanting the OM (AUM) mantra will bring you to a state of purity in body, mind and soul.

The Om is composed of three letters, A, U, and M. These symbolize the practitioner's impure body, speech, and mind; they also symbolize the pure exalted body, speech, and mind of a Buddha.

The HU Chant

Chanting HU (pronounced "hue") aloud or to yourself can open your heart to God's love and transform your life. This daily practice can help you experience more love, joy and spiritual freedom.

You can also try chanting this inwardly when faced with challenging situations. HU is a ancient name for God and is a very uplifting chant when singing it with a group of people.
