Morihei Ueshiba O-Sensei, the founder of aikido, was always reading books and studying religious texts in his search for enlightenment. We recommend that you do too!

Budo - Teachings of the Founder of Aikido By Morihei Ueshiba O-Sensei

Budo outlines the teachings and techniques of the founder of aikido. Written in 1938, it contains 132 pages with 440 black and white photos, and an introductory chapter chronicling Morihei Ueshiba O-Sensei's life and times by his son, Kisshomaru Ueshiba.

It should be the first book all practitioners of aikido should have in their collection. An invaluable guide to the spiritual depths of the arts. Master Morihei Ueshiba preferred teaching his students directly and left few writings regarding his martial arts philosophy.

Aikido - The Co-ordination of Mind and Body for Self Defence By Koichi Tohei

Written with the authorisation of Morihei Ueshiba, this book is the definitive guide behind the art and describes the 50 basic techniques. An excellent book for beginners, and a great reference material.

A book by Master Koichi Tohei (the first to receive 10th Dan by the founder of Aikido) explains some of the key notes in aikido and also demonstrates the martial techniques.

The Spirit of Aikido
by Kisshomaru Ueshiba

Kisshomaru Ueshiba, the son of the founder of modern aikido and an authority, illustrates the basic aikido movements and explains the central philosophy of unity of mind and body with the universe. Essential reading with a well written overview of Aikido. Including insightful chapters about Aikido philosophy and ideas, that encourage thinking.

Aikido Complete Basic Techniques
by Gozo Shioda and Yasuhisa Shioda

Demonstrates how the Basic Exercises that comprise the core teaching in Aikido will develop physical focus and teach the student how to harness that focus for wider practical applications and self defence.

Practitioners will find this book an invaluable study resource, and discover they will gain a desire to improve themselves. It includes almost all of the most important basic throws, is valuable both as a study aid to practice and as a collection of reference material.

Enlightenment Through Aikido
by Kanshu Sunadomari

This is a collection of short essays written by Kanshu Sunadomari between 1992 and 1999. Sunadomari Sensei was a direct live-in student of the Founder of Aikido before the beginning of World War II and has practised and taught aikido for over sixty years.

The essays compiled in this book contain quotes from the Founder, as well as personal interpretations of the Founders teachings by the author... one of my personal favourites!

Secrets of Aikido
by John Stevens

Aikido harmonizes the body and spirit with natural forces and universal laws. This aikido book explores the hidden secrets and spiritual aspects of the art.

It covers the Tantric dimension of Kototama, the Aikido science of sound, the six spiritual pillars of Aikido, practices for purification, and breathing techniques for a calm spirit.

Art of Peace
